Overpopulation is the growth of population to such a size that space, food, water, or other resources available to support it are insufficient. It is one of the major problems that many countries all over the globe are facing today. And scholars like us, in the Philippine Science High School, are well informed of the causes and effects of overpopulation. We believe that, in our own simple ways, we can make changes and help solve this problem in the future, or even now.
One of the major effects of overpopulation is poverty. Having too many citizens means that the government should support more people, and this makes things harder. The effect of overpopulation can be seen in almost every corner of the Philippines. If you look outside the Philippine Science High School campus, you will see clusters of families staying there as squatters. These people have no houses of their own. These people are suffering of poverty. And what makes things worse is that each family living there, consists of five members each in average. These children are lucky enough if they have two meals a day. Some children, in worse cases of poverty, get sick because of the kind of environment they live in and even worse, some die of hunger or disease. Why do these things happen? It is because the parents of these children cannot support their many children.
So, our group talked and came out with a solution. In our Environmental Science subject, we are taught that the major cause of overpopulation is because of the lack of understanding of the matter and lack of education. Therefore, we should educate people regarding this matter and make them understand the effects of having too many children when they cannot support them. We should make them realize that their children are their responsibilities. If they want to have many children, they should make sure that they provide these children with their needs and support them. As of the moment, our government and some large companies already established charities and foundations to help in raising funds for the poor.
Not only us, but also you can help in solving this problem. Every person from wherever in the world could make a difference. We believe that we could make a difference but you can make even bigger changes if you help. XD – By Karen Dela Cruz
